Knowles Travelgoods, Worcester (and Sports store)



1884 – Albert John Knowles founded the business ‘Knowles Late Carter’, a small Saddlers shop, 50 Broad Street, Worcester


Albert John dies and his wife Mary Knowles takes over and goes into partnership with Mr Jakeman to form A.J Knowles & Co



1920 – Arthur John Knowles becomes involved with the business

1923 – Mary Knowles dies and Mr Jakeman is bought out of the business

1948 – Anthony John Knowles follows in his father’s footsteps and joins the company

1950 – The name is changed to A J Knowles & Son and the retail of handbags, luggage and sports goods are introduced





1957? – Arthur John Knowles Dies               

 1960 – Becomes a Private Limited Company

 1965 – Anthony buys 50, Broad Street and undertakes alterations to the building

1972 – A second premises, 19, Broad Street is bought to be opened as a sports shop
 1976 – Richard John Knowles joins the company

1992 – Anthony John dies and his wife Sheila takes over the running of the Travelgoods shop. Richard becomes Managing Director of the company
